WHAT IS A HERO? Who is your favorite superhero? Through this unit, students explore Joesph Campbell's arc of the hero's journey through film and literature. Students will then build creative skills by designing and publishing a unique superhero with powers and a personal backstory. Later, students make connections between fictional and real-life heroes in their lives, writing letters of gratitude to a contemporary hero in their life.

WHAT'S WORTH REMEMBERING? When we communicate, who is listening and how do we make our message stick? Using cooperative literature circles unit, students explore historical issues such as child labor, and water rights to create presentations based around the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

WHERE ARE ALL THE PEOPLE? How many people are on earth? What are some of the challenges facing societies as our global population continues to increase? Throughout our unit, we inquired into issues surrounding population change. We found that the population of human societies changes due to a variety of processes, and sustainable development can help to promote more equity in these societies. We communicated our learning through infographics- which easily articulate the need for further development in particular countries around the world.

HOW CAN I BE WATER WISE? Where does our water come from? Where does it go? In this unit, students will find out about the causes and consequences of water waste and the water cycle. Students explore their local watershed and learn about the water issues in their community. Then students will take action to track and create data sets documenting the water usage in their homes to raise awareness with their families about water conservation.
